I'm a guy who thinks details matter.
So I was disappointed when yesterday's email on Data Sovereignty went out with such poor formatting.
I had put a lot of thought into every bold, italic, and line break. Only to see I'd sent a bare blob of text.
Oh, well. Stuff happens.
It's a useful incident, though.
Here's what happened:
I compose the email on Squarespace, as usual.
It looked good on screen, but I didn't realize that I'd chosen a formatting option that doesn't translate well to email.
When CiviCRM then sent it out to my list, it just took what it was given, as it should.
Lessons worth noting:
Humans, even careful ones, make mistakes.
Software won't always prevent that.
Using different software might have helped prevent this mistake, but no software will prevent all mistakes.
That will be worth considering the next time
your staff makes a goof,
your WordPress site gives you grief,
or your open-source CRM works differently than expected.
Usually in such cases, jumping to a different platform is a big project that doesn't solve the problem.
On the other hand,
training your staff,
improving your processes,
and using the software as it's designed,
will usually address the underlying issues.
Of course,
That's still hard.
And it's not as exciting
as buying a shiny new tool.
But it's a lot more effective.
All the best,
A.
